Attempting to harness the power of CHDK

Despite the fact that I’m not particularly good at photography, I have two cameras.  Ignoring the obvious Asian joke, one is a DSLR, and the other is a point-and-shoot (Canon A3400) that I got to have as a backup camera, or for events and occasions where I still want to take pictures but a DSLR is not logically feasible.

Over the last two years, I guess I’ve grown accustomed to the quality that my DSLR is capable of shooting, so I’ve grown ever critical and dissatisfied with anything shot with my 3400 in comparison.  I like the idea of having a secondary camera that I can take pictures with, because despite the fact that I’m generally pleased with the quality of photos my iPhone takes, I’m always impulsively paranoid that taking too many pictures will tax and bog down my iPhone and suck the battery dry in a critical time.

Okay, it wasn’t really ruined

Despite my proclamation that Black Friday was ruined, in the end, it didn’t turn out so bad for me in spite of my judgmental claims. I started shopping on the afternoon of Thanksgiving, and while the food was cooking, I made a few purchases, and felt pleased with myself for tackling things that I wanted, at good prices, and eliminating the need to wake up at 3:30 in the morning the following day.

All in all, I have to boast the things I managed to procure without even having to leave my house:

  • 23″ monitor
  • Canon point-and-shoot camera
  • 32GB SD card
  • Three sweaters
  • One pair of jeans

I stayed up until almost 3 am, after all my company had left, and perused through the varying sales that were already in full swing or were just beginning since it had turned midnight on PST. I didn’t buy anything else for myself, but I was so drunk with online shopping, that I helped acquire other things that they were looking for.

Black Friday has been ruined this year

I’m one of those weirdoes that in spite of whatever I may say, occasionally indulge in the insanity known as Black Friday.  Throughout the year, the closer it gets to November and Thanksgiving, I assess things that I either need, want, or both.  Over the last few years, in participating in Black Friday deal-seeking, I have come out with a variety of items, such as an Xbox, a Shop-Vac for my garage, and the stereo system in my bedroom, among various other things.

Whenever I succeed at getting the rare items and the things that I want, I am filled with an overwhelming sense of accomplishment, victory and smugness.  In the instances that I have failed to get the things that I want, I am upset, disappointed, and swear to never participate in Black Fridays ever again.  But typically, I do.

This year is kind of different, though.  I don’t have a very extensive list of things that I think I want or need; sure there are a few things, but nothing extravagant really, and nothing that seems to be an insanity doorbuster by any means.  I have my televisions, I have an Xbox, I have my gadgets; among the things that usually cause people to trample each other or shoot each other in parking lots, I’ve already got.

Photos: Candids from the LoL Photoshoot

We took our League of Legends costumes back from Dragon*Con, and drug them out to the woods the get some purty pictures taken of them in a setting that wasn’t a hotel.  Overall, it was a fun experience albeit a little surreal one, because one, I don’t really consider myself that much of a costumer these days other than something for Dragon*Con, and two, I’m hardly good at it, but typically I’m the one behind the camera.

Regardless, that part remained partially the same, because as I did at Dragon*Con, I busted out the crappy old Sony point-and-shoot that fit snugly in one of my many duster pockets to take some candid photos with.  I thought my Sony could still take decent daytime snapshots, but as you’ll see, that’s hardly the case anymore.  I hate to admit it, but I think I need to get a replacement backup point-and-shoot.

First filler post: Maple Bacon Doughnut Beer

I didn’t even know this stuff existed, but it’s apparently a collaboration between the Rogue beer company, and that doughnut company out in Portland that made the maple bacon donut I jizzed myself over after eating, Voodoo Doughnuts.  Despite my love for bacon, I’m very reluctant to dare try such an interesting beer, because frankly, I haven’t really liked many Rogue beers.

Arrogant Bastard Ale, Santa’s Private Reserve, Dead Guy, none of those beers really resonate well with me.  They tend to err on the side of way hopsy and bitter for my pallet.

Smoking on the bay

Despite the fact that he’s a miserable, horrible, evil human being, I’m still quite fond of this photograph.

And in spite of the noobness I’m showing with my DSLR since I got it, I have to say that this is probably one of my favorite photos I’ve ever taken on it since I got it.  The combination of slightly high aperture to get that subtle blur in the background, combined with the focus on Huzzard smoking his cigar, the smoke rising ominously.  And then there’s a big Native American statue with a stogies sign and Starbucks in the background, and it pretty much sums up Huzzard’s perfect idea of what an afterlife should be.

Photos: Moar camera practicing with baseball

I took my DSLR out to Lawrenceville, to practice taking pictures during a minor league baseball game.  Admittedly, I’m still getting used to needing to be a little more intricate with focus, and the processing process dealing with RAWs.  But I do like the versatility that it brings, and I look forward to hopefully getting better as time progresses.

But I am loving some of the results, and if anything at all, that I can get some fairly sweet closer-up pictures.  The deal with all the pitcher pictures is that this guy is Julio Teheran, and if everything goes right in the world, he’ll be a really, really, really good pitcher for the Atlanta Braves for the next four to six years.
