Either the franchise is sputtering or I’m growing up

Impetus: There’s a new Resident Evil game being released in 2015, Resident Evil: Revelations 2.

And I just don’t care.  It even has Claire Redfield as the main protagonist of this game, as I’d been clamoring for over the last few installments of the game that have repeatedly had Chris, Jill, Leon and Ada in them.  Yet it changes nothing at all, and I’m just completely unenthused by the announcement that another chapter of RE is coming out.

This means that the franchise as a whole is really sputtering, dying, drying up, or all of the above, OR it means that I’m simply growing up, past caring about the franchise.  Perhaps it’s a combination of both, as well as a few other factors, like the fact that I can’t stop playing League of Legends, and that I’m pretty bad when it comes to expanding my horizons beyond a few things at a time, much less spreading out my attention over numerous video games.

Rebecca Chambers, M.D.

Piggybacking on my last post about how underrated and overlooked Resident Evil Zero was, it made me think about game, namely co-main character, Rebecca Chambers and her character background.

When Rebecca is introduced in the original Resident Evil during Chris Redfield’s scenario, we meet the timid and deferential field medic for the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo team, who quickly latches onto Chris, and aides him in his quest by being able to mix chemicals as well as (with enough practice) play The Moonlight Sonata on the piano, to solve puzzles.

Little do we realize in RE1 that Rebecca has already been through hell and back at the time she’s introduced, because she had already encountered zombified humans, leeches, apes and other monsters in another mansion/laboratory, with the aid of a marine falsely accused for genocide whom she helped escape execution during the events of RE0.

But forget the fact that by the time you meet her, she’s already an accomplished zombie and monster slayer as well as a survivor; when you meet Rebecca Chambers for the first time, she is 18 years old.

What about Zero?

Long story short: It was announced the other day that Resident Evil 1 was going to be getting a re-release.  Again.

This will be an HD re-release of the 2002 GameCube rendition, which was already a re-make from the original 1996 classic that was released on the Piss1, before it was also ported out to the Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64 and DS.  In spite of the fact that the re-make had some modifications to the setting and execution of the story, it’s still fundamentally the same plot as the original version of the game, although it’s popularly argued that the re-makes’ slight alterations to the game justify not necessarily accepting it as RE storyline canon.

That being said, the bottom line is that the concept of Resident Evil 1 has been beaten like a dead horse, dug up and beaten some more.

Resident Evil film casting fails

When the film adaptation of Resident Evil came out in 2002, I could easily say that I was pleased. Everyone knows the stigma of failure that is typically expected that of video game-inspired movies, but RE, in my opinion, did a great job of using the game series as inspiration, but for the most part, going in their own direction with a story. All characters were original, but the concept was the same, almost as if it were feasible that this story could have very easily occurred during the events of the game. Nods to the series were given throughout the film, be it through little things, like the design of the transport train, as well as more blatant things, like the inclusion of a Licker as the “boss” of the movie.

Resident Evil made a decent flick, because it wasn’t trying to be the exact game, portrayed in film.

I also had the hugest crush on Milla Jovovich, until I heard her speak in the director’s commentary.

Resident Evil and herb application: can we get some consistency?

I’m not entirely sure what brought on this train of thought, but I was thinking about the Resident Evil series.  Namely the fact that aside from first aid sprays being a way of replenishing health, there are medicinal herbs scattered throughout the fast locations throughout the series.

Seriously, if you apply the growth of herbs to the real world, then herbs are pretty much the most versatile plants on the planet, as they’re able to grow/exist in not just Raccoon City, but as well as in the Spanish countryside, Chinese ghettos, African shantytowns, war-torn Eastern Europe, as well as extreme climates such as Antarctica and an active volcano.  Oh, and pretty much 2,000 leagues under the sea as well.

Best Ada Wong costumer evar

I kinda feel lame and like I’m a teenage fanboy posting this, but I’m in a little bit of a writer’s funk lately, and I don’t like being in writer’s funks, so why the hell not?

This pretty lass goes by the name of sweet-little-world on her DA page, but more importantly is probably the best Ada Wong costumer I’ve seen.

I’m extremely picky when it comes to my assessment of what I think is good and what I think isn’t when it comes to costumes. Resident Evil 4 has been out for ages, and RE6 a little bit more recent, but the fact of the matter is that throughout all these years, I’d never actually really seen a single Ada Wong costumer that made me go “whoa” until I saw this one.

Not only does she do a bang-up job with The Red Dress from RE4, but she also does a pretty excellent execution of the RE6 Ada (although I would contest that the shirt is probably not velvet, but that’s a minor detail in the overall picture). But The Red Dress is obviously the more memorable of the two outfits, and I simply think that just about everything is right with it.

Ranking the women of Resident Evil

I’d been tossing the idea for this post in my head for a little while, but I wanted to actually play through all of Resident Evil 6 before doing so. I don’t base my opinions on simply just appearance, although it does probably play a good part of it; but I also like to learn a little bit about the characters themselves, and see what kind of characters they are, and whether or not their personas, attitudes and actions are annoying or not.

That being said, I do fancy myself as a very well versed fan of the Resident Evil series in general. I’ve played just about every single one of the canon games, so I’d like to think I know what I’m talking about, but ultimately in the end, it’s still a personal opinion list, and of course, it’s objectifying women, but I don’t deny that I’ve been known to make some tasteless chauvinistic remarks before, so it’s not like it should be a surprise to anyone.

Anyway, without further ado, from worst to best, I rank the womens of Resident Evil. Also word of caution, I may give up some spoilers here and there if you, or I, am not careful with how I write this.
