Isn’t it ironic

That with the start of February marks the start of Black History Month, and one of the biggest things to start circulating on the web now is a heroic black mall cop enforcing some necessary black-on-black justice, but because all parties involved are black, it’s one gigantic racial clusterfuck.  Obviously, this is all taking place in Atlanta, and making worldwide news as far as to where it’s covered by the Daily Mail.

As I alluded to, by calling him heroic, I think favorably of this guy.  And he’s smart too, by arming himself not just with a taser and retractcable clubs, but it’s all about the GoPro he wears on his vest, that’s taking video evidence of everything he’s doing and everything everyone he’s looking at is doing.  It’s like that part in Hot Fuzz where Simon Pegg is telling Nick Frost that the most important piece of equipment that they have as police officers is their notepads; except in the case of this mall cop, his notepad has evolved a little bit, and is capturing everything verbatim in live video.  I admire the fact that he’s not only arming himself, but also using his head to protect himself as best as possible.

But I can’t help but think that this guy is making a lot of enemies on a regular basis with his no-fear attitude and zero reluctance at engaging individuals clearly in larger crews.  If this has been going on as long as it’s being claimed to have been going on, and with this much video evidence, and there has still been no reinforcement or backup for this guy, it’s only a matter of time before he engages the absolute wrong person, and he becomes a dead man.

Awareness is useless if nothing ever comes out of it, and I’ve been aware that this particular chunk of Atlanta is the last place on the planet anyone would want to be when the sun goes down.  For reference to those unaware, this specific location is not far from where the early episodes of The Walking Dead where Rick meets Glenn, Andrea, T-Dog and everyone else who ends up jobbing or is forgettable – it’s a ghetto during the day time, even worse at night, and with no Super Mall Cop there to enforce it, it’s not too far off from being an apocalypse in on a regular basis.

It’s admirable that the internet has emerged to raise some money for the mall cop, but I’d worry that it would all go towards the wrong intent.  I’m not sure how taxes work, and according to Andy DuFresne, an amount like $20,000 can’t exactly change hands without some sort of tax scrutiny, and I’d imagine an honest salt-of the-earth kind of guy like mall cop doesn’t really want any tax scrutiny.  I agree that mall cop could use some better equipment and safety precautions, but what he really needs is some reliable, dependable reinforcement, and I’m pretty sure that he himself has no power when it comes to hiring reinforcements, and I’m not sure $20,000 would be enough to hire another body, much less for beyond a single year.

But all semantics aside, Godspeed, super mall cop, and hopes that you remain safe and keep putting degenerate thugs back in their place.
